Wimbledon Adopts Video Review Technology in 2025.

Wimbledon court with video review technology

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay systems.

Video review technology are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Competitors are granted the right to question particular rulings made by the official, echoing the system already in operation at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This development follows just a year after the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which effectively ended the longstanding role of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the call of the ELC system, but they can request the official to re-examine other decisions, such as:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball touched an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance end of a rally.

Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a competitor can initiate.

Case in Point

A recent case took place in Indian Wells recently, where a top player initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a difficult situation for the official, but believed his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and determined the player was guilty of hindrance, granting the point to his opponent.

Growing Trend

Video reviews aren't new for major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have the system in place at every one of its events.

Other Changes

Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where spectators have occasionally been unsure whether a shot was in or out.

Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
